I see your IP addresses - I know who some of you are.... leave me comments silly! Tell me things like how much it costs to get a damper replaced/fixed, how often chimney sweeping is really needed, what you think of Bush, what you think of stem cells...
Entertain me - I've been entertaining you, now haven't I?
Oh, and Liz, if you ever read this, I know you hated the phrase "M-train". I now know, after organizing this event, that being a manager is harder than physics & calculus. And I thank you, for teaching me that lesson early so I didn't offend too many folks after meeting you freshman year ;)
Why do you need the damper fixed?
I really hope Bush gets voted out. Primarily because I'd like to see the rest of the world ease up in anti-American sentiment, and ending his horribly alienating foreign policies is the only way to do that. The rest of the world might forgive Americans for *putting* him in office, I'm not sure they'll let slide *keeping* him in office. (I'm a Canadian nonvoter so I'm allowed to say this. :P)
Oh, and stem cell research *must* be allowed to continue, and by that I don't mean in its present form: without proper federal funding or access to proper cell lines. It's criminal that the most promising medical research in a generation is crippled (at least in the States) by an administration's ethical squeamishness.
Okay, I'm done with my inflammatory comments ;-)
Damper is bent - in fact, it's damn hard to tell which way is open vs closed. While it gets "ok" draw - it did get smoky last night. Ideally I'd get both better draw and less heat loss (when not in use) by replacing it!

I have read that depending in the condition of the
damper, it can actually draw air in from the outside
instead of pulling the smoke from inside to outside.
Results in "smokiness" in the room, and is often hard
to tell if it is working correctly. Sounds like yours is
not.
As for sweeping. We were told whenever you buy a
house, just get it swept, you never know how well
the previous owner kept it and if the damper is bad
you can guess they did not maintain it very well.
That said we still have not had ours swept, so if our
house burns down; well at least there is a good reason
for it. (Some friends in Bellingham had a chimney
fire, it's no fun to have the fire department pull the
whole wall off your house the chimney is connected to).
