I probably shouldn't write this after being up for 24 hours
(long flight home from Savannah followed by struggled attempt at staying
awake to resync to this time zone).
I learned two things while visiting home:
1. "The only way to win at cards is to cheat." - Grandma, 85
"Grandma!!!" - me
"Whaaaaaa--at. Cheating is a skill" - Grandma
2. It's okay to lie. (Dad gives out false phone numbers to companies
like say Dell or Gateway)
All and all, I had a good week. I had biscuits n' gravy twice, and then
on my last day I had (all at one meal mind you) cornbread, biscuits, fried
chicken, fried vidalia onions, mashed potatoes, mac n' cheese, and sweet
tea. Then I had a stomachache which started the aforementioned "geez,
I've been awake for 24 hours now" story. Oh, and I had hushpuppies for
lunch that day, before heading to the beach to get my last sun, er, burn.
:)
I spent lots of time at the pool/beach. Pool & ocean were both at about
80 degrees, air around 86. Humidity surprisingly low. Accents... it's
nice to hear EVERYONE talking like that, oh, and nice to have two country
stations to boot. I read three books - 2 quick mysteries and
Memoirs of a Geisha. This has to be one of the best books I've
ever read -- and then as my roommate said, you flip it over and find
out it was written by a man. Amazing book, amazing man likely.
I sat next to a guy on the plane that was 'from' California, relocated
to HHI, whereas I am in the reverse scenario. We commiserated on how
hard it is to find christians in the bay area (or for him, to find a zen
meditation center in the Bible Belt).
It's nice to
have a good
horoscope every once in a while:
LIBRA (September 22-October 21): When you're good, you're very, very good
and when you're bad ... you're a real hottie. This week -- thank your
lucky stars! -- is one of those sizzling times. A reformed Mercury is
about to really move his tail in your counting house. Dare we say Midas
touch?
My URL redirection service sucks. So if the menu seems to be
broken... try substituting www.cs.unc.edu/~sfisher for
www.susanfisher.net. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.
Yesterday - this weekend in general was fabulous. I laid out on
my roof yesterday, enjoying the view of the still green hills while baking
in the finally spring like temperatures. Ahhhh.... It's amazing how much
having the time and weather to do that affects me!
My good hip is losing ROM, but since I do the same PT exercises on both
sides, I figure I am doing all that I can. Now that it's warmer, maybe
I'll start swimming.
Random personal note: I keep falling for non-christians. sigh.
Am now reading Speaking With the Angels, having finished All
Families Are Pyschotic, All the Names, and The Witches of
Eastwick.
My one year
anniversary of
having come to California. I am
decidedly happy here, despite my many complaints about the FREEZING cold
weather. 55 degree in May, hmph! The 8 mos of sun (starting NOW!)
definately help make this place workable for me.
Work is good, despite my isolation. Wlw and jules keep me connected
through our constant IM-ing. Foos is good, church and bible study are
good, health ain't too bad. So overall, I really don't have much room to
complain about anything. Of course, if you know me, you know that I
can come with something in 0.2 ms if you ask.
I've been getting back in touch with my ditzy side of late. Forgot my
pancreas one day, lost the vital piece of paper with the apt number of a
friend I was meeting out the windy car window... then proceeded to call
everyone possible to get someone to rescue me by reading my email for me!
Thanks be to Leah. What the heck, I'll thank Jason too. Where would I
be without friends like these?
Still trying to get back into the social scene after my months of
self-imposed isolation (going out on crutches and/or a cane and/or while
being completely unable to maintain any balance) kind of put a damper on
things. I've been reading a lot lately. I started the Old Testament
straight through earlier this year but got off track. I hope to dig back
in soon. Perhaps I should go do that rather than writing this at 1:30 in
the morning....
Random musings...
I'm reading All Families Are Pyschotic, my family is decidedly
normal.
I worked two charity events for JDRF recently - one of which in a matter
of hours raised 1.5 million dollars. I have enough trouble wrapping my
head around my salary (post-grad-school-ramen-days), nonetheless that
individuals were donating 50k at a time! It's cool, but such a different
world! The second event was a screening of Finding Nemo at Pixar (also
for JDRF) - where the most famous guest was Robin Williams.
News story on the nightly news the other night about all the effort
going into saving animals from being put to
sleep - including fundraisers, raising awareness, etc. While they
reported "live" in front of a shelter about the poor animals, two homeless
men walked by. Yes, the animals are our highest priority?
Pic
from the wrap party of me and the Seattle boys :)
Went to the premiere of "Finding Nemo" this weekend - totally
exceeed my expectations - I loved it! Amazing. Then of course we had the
black tie party afterwards where I had a little too much to drink, but had very
good friends to get me home ;) It's sad how low our tolerance gets as we
grow up. It's also scary how high our tolerance was in college! The
party was good, but very cramped/not enough space for the 1400 or so
people. And somehow it seemed sacreligious that only sushi was served!
